Jean Patou (1887-1936) was a French fashion designer. He opened a small dressmaking salon in 1912. World War I interrupted his business but he started up again in 1919. He popularized the cardigan, made the "flapper" dresses longer, but was known for the controversial design of women's athletic wear, such as the tennis skirt.
