Jabot

A shirt with a very large jabot.

A Jabot is a neck ornament typical of tops and shirts, which basically consists in a wavy piece of fabric attached to the neck (or to the neckline of a top) falling down onto the neck and the chest.

Its origin dates back to the 17th century, when noble people used to wear shirts, tops but also dresses which showed this ornament. In later centuries the jabot was often used to replace the tie.

Nowadays it is used mainly for womenswear, being considered a very glamorous decoration, and can be found in many fabrics, the more common are silk, shantung, taffetà and satin, as well as lace. The most popular colors are pure white and black.

This term can also refer, more generally, to other types of neck ornaments, such as lace medallions and showy bows.
